THE GOVERNMENT OF JAMAICA (GOJ)
The Government of Jamaica (GOJ) first became majority owners of the Jamaica Public Service Co. Ltd. in 1970, having acquired controlling interests from foreign shareholders. In 2001, the Jamaican government sold 80% of the Company to Mirant Corporation. The GOJ continues to be involved in directing the affairs of the Company as it owns 19.9% of the company’s shares. The remaining 80% is shared equally between Marubeni Corporation and Korea East-West Power Company Ltd , the remaining less than 1%, is held by private shareholders.
JPS falls under the portfolio of the Ministry of Energy and Mining. This Ministry is responsible for the overseeing the function of the energy sector. It monitors energy supplies and the identification of alternative energy sources, as well as energy conservation. The ministry is driven by the following:

To drive policy creation and implementation, research and development in the energy and minerals sectors for sustainable national transformation.

The sustainable development of the energy and mineral resources of the country geared to support national development, productivity and competitiveness for the nation.
Mission
To ensure Jamaica’s access to and affordability of energy supplies, energy security and the diversification, development and competitiveness of both the energy sector and the minerals sector for sustainable national development.
The Government of Jamaica is committed to the growth and operations of JPS as it seeks to achieve the development goals of Jamaica.
