AFTER THE HURRICANE
STAY AWAY FROM POWER LINES
Never touch a fallen power line or try to move it yourself. If the line is still energized, you could be electrocuted.
IF YOU EVACUATE
When you return, check for electrical damage, such as frayed wires, sparks, the smell of hot or burned insulation, or disconnected service wires. If you find damage, do not turn your power on until an electrician checks your premises.
ELECTRICAL REPAIRS
Get a certified electrician to repair electrical damage to your premises.
EMERGENCY GENERATORS
If you are using a portable generator, plug appliances directly into the generator, using extension cords if necessary. Only a licensed electrician should attempt to connect a stand-by generator to the main electric panel of a home or business. For your safety, place the portable generator outside the house so the generator gets proper ventilation. Always turn off the generator when refueling.
